THE WHO'S, WHAT'S, WHEN'S, WHERE'S, AND HOWS OF A LAUGHTER CLUB
A Laughter Club is a
group that meets to consciously engage in the process of laughter.
Laughter Club programs provide light-to- moderate exercise for mental
and physical flexibility, mood regulation, stress reduction, and an
attitude boost. The program works well in almost any environment
including: schools, senior centers, long term care and hospitals, the
workplace, fitness centers, libraries, support communities and public
parks. The program is easily adopted for anyone in any situation.
Using the methods based
on the work of World Laughter Tour, Inc, and Laughter Club
International, a qualified instructor called a Certified Laughter
Leader™ (CLL) will lead you through a step by step program of breathing, stretching, and various types of laughter actions (some borrowed from yoga). During
the session you are encouraged to be playful, to have fun, relax and
laugh. Jokes and comedy are not need: only the joy of laughter. There
are also discussions of the benefits of laughter and the concepts of
sensible living that lead to healthy attitudes.
A typical group is 5-25 people, but you can be larger. A session typically lasts about 30 to 45 minutes.
WHAT IS THE WORLD LAUGHTER TOUR?
The
World Laughter Tour, Inc. was founded by Steve Wilson and Karyn Buxman
to support, promote, and act as a clearinghouse for the global
grassroots laughter movement, with the mission of bringing events to
every continent that promote health and peace through laughter.
HOW MANY LAUGHTER CLUBS ARE THERE?
It
has been estimated that there may be as many as 2,000 laughter clubs
worldwide. Now there are hundreds of WLT Laughter Clubs in the United
States, and other countries. WLT Certified Laughter Leaders are active
in Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Scotland, Australia, Columbia, Chile,
South Africa, Israel, and more. The first officially recognized
laughter club in the USA was chartered in June 1999, in Orrville,
Ohio, at the YMCA. New clubs are starting all the time.
